Michel Roux

My husband David and I were so sorry to learn that Michel Roux had died this week. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Alain and all the Roux family. We have read glowing tributes and wish to add ours too for when our paths crossed in 2002 on a visit to The Waterside Inn in Bray, Michel gave me an opportunity to produce some exclusive art for him to use in his restaurant business, his open willingness to help and support my works have left treasured memories.

Myrea Pettit at lunch with Chef Patron Michel Roux at The Waterside Inn,

And so I did. Michel then asked me if I would be kind enough to draw some images, with food as the theme, and we met again when he asked me to lunch with him 5th September, and was able to present to him my work.

Another fine eating experience this time cooked by his son Alain who follows in the family tradition, ‘just an amazing chef’, no wonder the coveted three star Michelin accolade has been awarded to The Waterside Inn for seventeen years.

I would recommend this experience to visitors to UK as the ultimate of fine hospitality. The lunch was superb as were the fine french wines, as you might expect as the guest of the Patron.

I was greatly honored and delighted when Michel showed appreciation of the images I had prepared for him. For me my Valentine visit had turned into a real fairy story.

Thank you Michel Roux for your support and enthusiasm I greatly appreciate everything you have done for me.

Myrea Fairy

Maybe she’s an angel
and a fairy, all in one

Yes, her face reveals it,
with a smile bright as the sun

Remarkable, what she can do
with a canvas clean

Every time I view her work,
I want to dance and sing

After all the love she’s brought,
into this big, old world

I ask You, God to heal her, please
this lovely fairy girl

Her drawings are enchanting
her paintings quite divine

Oh how I’d love to do that too
with talent that’s all mine

Perhaps she studied, I don’t know
perhaps it is her gift

Each time, that I see her work
it gives my soul a lift

You never know, from day-to-day
what she’ll paint or draw

Over at dear Fairies World
you can see them all

Underneath shooting stars
and sun that is so bright

Fairies, that are flower friends
she paints, to my delight

Earnestly, she colors them
her fairies, one and all

Ever seeking to perfect her fairies
big or small

Lingers, as her fingers
hold the paintbrush, ever ready

Brush strokes of bright color
she applies them, with hands, steady

Easily and pleasingly,
she brings them all to life

Tackling canvas, magically,
there’s seldom any strife

There is very little that
this artist can’t achieve

Even poems, from strangers
help her mind’s eye to perceive

Round the bend, she has been
and sometimes needs reprieve

She herself, really
is a fairy, I believe

Over her small shoulder
her muse is looking on

Offering her services
from fairy dusk ’til dawn

Now it’s time to end this
I’ve stars to wish upon

Lily of the Valley

1st May is La Fête du Muguet the tradition in France is to give the ones you love a little bouquet of lily-of-the-valley, for good luck and to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Lily of the Valley
The meaning of this flower is “You will find Happiness.”
Muguet © Myrea Pettit

Originally the idea as a family was to take the children into the forests and let them pick your muguet together.

These days in the cities you will more likely buy it from florist’s, or one of the countless vendors stand that appear overnight on every street corner, many these days selling for charities and other good causes.

Although at all other times of the year, selling any kind of flowers or anything else on the street requires paying for a permit, merry May Day is exempted from this tax, and anyone can sell the blossoms anywhere without being tithed by the city.

Naturally every florist has pots and bouquets of lily of the valley dominating their outdoor displays. The pots for lily of the valley are always deep and vase-shaped, another tradition.

People everywhere clutch their lily of the valley, to be offered to their loved ones. With May 1st also ushering in Beltaine I love this French custom it is such a perfect way to welcome the Rites of Spring, when all is bursting into blossom, and new life appears with animals, birds and insects and one thought turns to beauty, love, caring and togetherness, precious moments for all who share the Fairiesworld. Muguet is also known as Our Lady’s tears since, according to Christian legend, the tears Mary shed at the cross turned to Lilies of the Valley, and in another legend, the flower also sprang from the blood of St. George during his battle with the dragon.

Other names include May Lily, May Bells, Lily Constancy and Ladder-to-Heaven. In 1982 Lily of the Valley became the national flower of Finland .
